ALLERGY TREATMENT

Would you like to treat the cause of your allergies, not just the symptoms?  Sinus & Allergy Specialists of New Mexico offers both allergy shots and allergy drops.

Allergy shots, also called immunotherapy, are given to increase your tolerance to the substances (allergens) that provoke allergy symptoms. They usually are recommended for people who suffer from severe allergies or for those who have allergy symptoms more than three months each year. They do not cure allergies, but reduce your sensitivity to certain substances.

You may be identified as a candidate for allergy drop treatment – also known as sublingual immunotherapy.  Allergy drops work like allergy shots, slowly helping you build a tolerance to your allergies.

Allergy shots are covered by most insurance plans.  Allergy drop therapy is not currently covered by most insurances and payment is required at the time of service.  However, many patients agree the temporary investment is well worth the improvement in their health, reduction in allergy-related expenses, decreased number of office visits and overall quality of life.

The effectiveness of immunotherapy varies depending on the severity of a person’s allergies and the number of substances to which the person is allergic. In general, however, immunotherapy can safely and effectively treat a broad range of allergies, including pollens, dander, molds and other environmental allergies.

QUALITY OF LIFE AND ASSOCIATED CONDITIONS

The factors that affect the quality of life in patients with asthma are well described and generally accepted. However, it is not often appreciated that the quality of life (QOL) impacts allergy sufferers as severely as those with asthma or other chronic disease.

Allergic rhinitis is a common condition throughout the United States.  It is estimated that 15-40% of the population suffers from inhalant allergies.  It is more common in children and is often present before age 6 years.  There is good evidence that indicates that nasal allergies are increasing.  People with allergies have more medication cost since antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays are now over the counter and not covered by insurance. As a result, there is a considerable economic impact among allergy sufferers since allergies typically run in families.
